The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has upgraded Jamaica to a Level 3 designation in its latest COVID-19 travel advisory to citizens released this week.
In its announcement on Tuesday, CDC warned Americans to “avoid travel to Jamaica” if they are not up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines.
Jamaica had previously been downgraded to level one in April, due to its low levels of COVID-19.
However, on May 18, Health and Wellness Minister Dr Christopher Tufton confirmed that Jamaica was experiencing a fifth wave of COVID-19.
The wave was likely due to highly transmissable Omicron sub-variant BA. 2, which is present in the population.
Jamaica’s tourism sector could suffer a massive blow as a result of the CDC moving the country to its list of high-risk countries for COVID-19.
