Mayor of St Ann’s Bay in St Ann, Michael Belnavis, has been released from hospital after he was attacked at his residence in St Mary on Monday night.

The police are currently investigating the incident, which left Belnavis wounded.

According to reports, the mayor was ambushed by an unknown assailant around 11pm as he entered his home.

The intruder inflicted chop wounds to Belnavis’ upper body, but fortunately, the mayor was able to drive himself to St Ann’s Bay Regional Hospital, where he received treatment and was later released.

Senator Abka Fitz-Henley, a member of the Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) Communication Taskforce, confirmed the incident and stated that Belnavis sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

“[Mr. Belnavis] is expected to get better pretty soon and is thankful for all the outpouring of good wishes,” Fitz-Henley said.

Belnavis, who was sworn in as Mayor of St Ann’s Bay in March 2024, has been a prominent figure in local politics.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
