Rocky Meade declines Cabinet Secretary post amid public uproar

Former head of the Jamaican Defense Force (JDF), Lieutenant General Rocky Meade has declined the post of Cabinet Secretary.

“The current public discourse does not provide a sufficiently settled environment for the assumption of such a significant office and I will therefore seek His Excellencies’ understanding of my decision to decline,” Meade said. 

His decline of the position comes 48 hours after his appointment was announced by Prime Minister Andrew Holness.

Questions have been raised about the constitutionality of Meade’s appointment, with several attorneys contending that he was not a member of the public service, given the fact that JDF was not part of that arm of government.

The full letter, which was released by the Office of the Prime Minister, and contained Meade’s comments are below.
