Retired Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Steve McGregor has been selected by the People’s National Party (PNP) to represent Central Kingston in the upcoming general election.
McGregor will fill the vacancy left by Lawrence Rowe, whose candidacy withdrawal was announced by the PNP on Saturday.
According to a media advisory issued by the PNP, President Mark Golding and other party officials will officially present McGregor as the candidate at the constituency office on Wednesday at 6 pm.
This move comes as the PNP gears up for the next general election, with preparations reportedly going well, according to Golding.
McGregor retired from the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) in January of last year after serving the force for over 40 years.
He completed a Master of Science in Security Studies at the Caribbean Maritime University (CMU) months ahead of his retirement.
McGregor played a key role in transforming the Rockfort community, which had experienced a surge in crime before his arrival. According to the JCF, he launched the first Safe Community Program in Belair, St Ann, served as general secretary of the Jamaica Police Federation in 1996, and received his first LASCO Award in 2000, followed by a national award in 2015.
In August of last year, McGregor was appointed as the new Director of Security at the University of the West Indies, Mona.
