Unruly Entertainment, founded by international dancehall superstar Popcaan, has released a statement addressing the recent events surrounding the Vybz Kartel Freedom Street concert.
The statement comes after event promoter Cordell ‘Skatta’ Burrell took issue with Popcaan and another dancehall artiste, Chronic Law, being disrespectful to him on stage.
Popcaan, in particular, made derogatory comments towards Burrell’s mother, which infuriated the event promoter because his mother is currently hospitalised.
The disrespectful remarks reportedly arose from both Popcaan and Chronic Law facing difficulties gaining entry to the venue of the event at the National Stadium in Kingston.
Unruly Entertainment said its statement aims to clarify misunderstandings and provide insight into the challenges faced by its team during the event.
The statement begins by extending respect to Vybz Kartel for his exceptional performance, marking a historic moment for the dancehall community. However, it highlights the operational challenges and miscommunications at the venue, which created unnecessary obstacles for Popcaan and his team.
According to the statement, Popcaan initially requested to use his band for the performance, which Kartel approved. However, efforts to rehearse with the band were dismissed by Burrell, the event promoter.
Unruly Entertainment claimed that Burrell allegedly discouraged the use of the band, citing concerns that it might “reflect poorly” on the event.
Despite these challenges, Popcaan remained committed to delivering a great performance. However, upon arrival at the venue, access issues caused significant delays. The Unruly team was stopped at the main gate, despite wearing their armbands, resulting in a delay of several hours.
Popcaan explained the situation, stating, “I was standing with Rolexx when he radioed Skatta to say he was at the gate with me. Skatta responded, ‘Mi cyaah bodda wid Popcaan and him 100 man,’ not even knowing how many people were actually with me. The reality is it was just my team and Chronic Law’s team.”
The statement also addresses prior professional disagreements between Popcaan and Burrell, which appear to have contributed to ongoing tension.
Unruly Entertainment emphasised that no member of their team attempted to enter the venue with any firearm, prioritising the safety and security of all patrons.
In conclusion, Popcaan stated: “It’s a new year. My team and I don’t have Skatta on our minds or thoughts. We’re focused on continuing to deliver for the fans and elevating dancehall culture.”
Further, Unruly Entertainment said it remains committed to providing high-quality music, performances, and experiences for fans worldwide, promoting an environment of mutual respect and collaboration that uplifts Jamaican music and its global impact.
