It’s being described as a major political bombshell; Lisa Hanna, the People’s National Party (PNP) Member of Parliament (MP) for South East St Ann, is leaving representational politics.

However, Hanna says she will be leaving at the end of the current electoral term in 2025.

Hanna advised PNP President, Mark Golding of her intention in a letter dated August 9, in which she said she was giving PNP time to find a new candidate.

“I have always been a champion of change and having the courage to do what’s right even when it’s not expedient or self-serving, as I believe courage has an obligation to pave new roads for the generation coming behind us.

“As such, I have recently decided to conclude my current journey in representational politics at the end of this term,” said Hanna in her letter to Golden.

“Therefore, I will not be offering myself as the party’s candidate in the next general election when it is called, a decision I have communicated to my constituency executive,” she added.

Hanna narrowly prevailed on the 2020 General Election, winning by some 31 votes.

Hanna, who is the Opposition Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, had lost to Golding in her bid for PNP president in November 2020.

Since that time, Hanna has been low-keyed in her roles within the Opposition party.

Hanna won the Miss World crown in 1993, and went on to be a four-time parliamentarian for South East St Ann.
