A Jamaican man has been slapped with ganja-related charges after he was rescued after a boat, which police suspect was used in drug smuggling, capsized in Caymanian waters last week.
Three persons remain missing after they reportedly fell overboard when the boat capsized last Friday.
The report of the incident only came to light on Wednesday after the Cayman Islands Coast Guard called off a search-and-recovery operation for the three missing men.
According to the Cayman Compass newspaper, the search for the men began shortly after 1:00 pm on Friday when the authorities were alerted to several packages floating along the coastline of Grand Cayman.
A 35-year-old Jamaican man, whose name was not released, was rescued shortly after the initial search began.
He was taken to the Cayman Islands Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries.
After being released he was arrested in connection with the 945 pounds of ganja recovered from the floating packages.
He was charged with illegal landing and importation of ganja and remains in custody.
On Monday, the Coast Guard shifted its efforts from search and rescue to search and recovery after the 72-hour mark was crossed.
