Jamaican mom charged with killing 3-y-o daughter in Florida

A 24-year-old Jamaican woman has been charged with fatally stabbing her three-year-old daughter at an apartment in North Miami Beach in Florida, United States on Tuesday. 

According to the North Miami Beach Police Department (NMBPD) Jellisa Amoya Baxter has been charged with first degree murder and aggravated child abuse. She’s reportedly from Clarendon in Jamaica.

The identity of the deceased child was not provided by NMBPD.

Officers reportedly responded at around 2:00 am on Tuesday at an apartment complex located at NE 163rd street and 10th Avenue.

This after Baxter called 911 and admitted to stabbing her three-year-old daughter to death. 

“When asked how she killed her daughter, the defendant replied (that) she strangled her at first, but when that didn’t work she stabbed her in the chest and neck,” an arrest affidavit said.

Officers, who responded to the scene, found Baxter in the living room of her apartment wearing a white robe, the affidavit continued.

The little girl’s body was found on the floor nearby with “several deep stab wounds.” Police recovered the murder weapon next to the girl’s body. 

Baxter is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Centre.

There was no motive provided in relation to the murder.
