Attorney-at-law Isat Buchanan, whose representing entertainer Vybz Kartel, is making an oral habeas corpus application in the Supreme Court in downtown Kingston.
Buchanan is seeking to have Kartel released on bail.
The hearing is scheduled to last for three hours on Monday. It is being heard before Supreme Court Judge, Justice Andrea Thomas.
A habeas corpus is a writ requiring a person under arrest to be brought before a judge or into court, especially to secure the person’s release unless lawful grounds are shown for their detention.
The entertainer, born Adidja Palmer, is still being held at the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre, this despite the United Kingdom Privy Council overturning his conviction and sentence for the murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams on March 14, 2024.
The Jamaican Court of Appeal is to decide in June whether Kartel and his three co-defendants will be retried for the murder.
Kartel and his three co-accused were initially convicted on March 13, 2014 for Williams murder.
