The Ministry of Education has announced that schools in Spanish Town, St Catherine, may reopen for face-to-face classes today, following a temporary closure due to violence in the area.
The decision to reopen will be made by school administrators, based on local security assessments.
According to the ministry, the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) will maintain a robust security presence in and around affected communities.
“In light of this development, all schools in the area are urged to carefully review their individual security situations and make decisions that prioritise the safety and well-being of students and staff,” the ministry stated.
School administrators are advised to maintain close communication with local law enforcement personnel and parents to address any lingering concerns.
Additionally, the ministry will continue to collaborate with the security forces to monitor the situation closely and respond swiftly to any developments.
Several schools in Spanish Town were closed on Thursday due to the killing of One Don leader Othneil ‘Thickman’ Lobban, which led to a flare-up of violence in the area.
The affected schools included St Jago High, Homestead Primary, Eltham High, Eltham Park Primary, St Catherine High, Johnathan Grant High, Spanish Town High, Spanish Town Primary, and Burmar Academy.
