Police investigators remain mum on the circumstances surrounding the attack and wounding of the Mayor of St Ann’s Bay and Chairman of the St Ann Municipal Corporation, Michael Belnavis.

Belnavis was initially released from hospital on Monday night, but was subsequently re-admitted after feeling discomfort on Tuesday afternoon.

He was chopped during the attack at his residence in St Mary, but the police are yet to confirm those details.

Sources say the mayor’s condition remains stable, and he is being supervised by medical personnel.

There are several rumours circulating on social media relative to the incident, which have not been confirmed by the police to date.

Jam Street Journal understands that a person of interest has been hospitalised under police guard in relation to the matter. He reportedly received a gunshot wound.

The governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), in a release, said the mayor was attacked by an unknown assailant at his residence on Monday and sustained what is believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

The release said the mayor and his family are thankful for the outpouring of support and good wishes.
