Two cops have been charged for their alleged role in the July 16 shooting death of 49-year-old tiler Phillip Wallace in Red Hills, St Andrew.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Fitz Bailey gave the update concerning Corporal Miguel Ebanks and Constable Purcell Carter at Tuesday’s police press conference.
He indicated that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) had ruled that the lawmen should be charged with murder and other offences stemming from Wallace’s killing.
A subsequent release from the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), which was also involved in the probe, said the officers were charged with murder, shooting with intent, and making use of a firearm to commit a felony
Corporal Ebanks was further charged with two counts of committing an act of corruption, contrary to section 14(1)(a) of the Corruption (Prevention) Act.
Both policemen will remain in police custody until the next mention date. The officers will return to court on Friday, August 5, 2022, INDECOM said.
On July 16, Wallace was sitting outside a bar along Green Glebe Road in Red Hills when he was shot by assailants. It is reported that he was killed after refusing to pay money to his attackers in a bribery case.
A third cop implicated in the case returned from overseas, and is in police custody. He is to be questioned by detectives in the coming days.
