17 lotto scammers charged in St James this year; one more arrested

The St James police’s increased crackdown on lottery scammers in the parish, since the start of the year, has resulted in another arrest.

This week’s arrest came on the heels of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) revealing that 17 persons have so far been charged with lottery scamming in the western Jamaica parish.

In the latest arrest on Wednesday, May 11, a joint police-military team raided premises in Montego Bay in the parish, which resulted in the arrest of a suspected lottery scammer. 

He is a 24-year-old man who lives at the residence.

Reports are that lottery scam paraphernalia was found during a search of a premises during the early morning raid.

In addition, several books containing identity information of people residing overseas, two cellular telephones, and a hard drive were found during the operation.

Between January 1 and April 29 this year, 17 people from St James have been placed before the courts on lottery scamming charges.

All 17 have been charged with possession of identity information.

Several ongoing gang conflicts in the parish have been linked to the illegal activity. 

The St James Police say they will continue to target players in lottery scamming.
