The Upper House of the Jamaican Parliament is facing a significant shake-up, with four vacant seats emerging after the recent resignations of Deputy Mayor of Kingston Delroy Williams and Attorney Ransford Braham.
This development follows resignations of Matthew Samuda and Don Wehby last year.
Samuda is currently Member of Parliament (MP) for St Ann North Eastern, while Wheby resigned due to health reasons.
Williams’ resignation, in particular, has sparked interest, as it comes amid reports that he has applied to be the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) candidate for the Clarendon Central constituency in the upcoming general election.
However, not everyone is supportive of Williams’ potential candidacy, with some delegates reportedly opposing his selection in the JLP stronghold.
In his resignation letter, dated February 11, Williams did not provide a reason for his departure. Meanwhile, Braham has indicated that the government will issue a statement on the matter.
The 2025-2026 Parliamentary sitting opens on Thursday.
Jamaicans are expected to head to the polls by September, or an earlier date to be decided by Prime Minister Andrew Holness.
