Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Mottley will deliver a presentation on the music and legacy of Reggae icon, Robert Nesta Marley, popularly known as Bob Marley, at the Jamaica Music Museum (JaMM) heritage series, Grounation.
Grounation will take place at the Institute of Jamaica (IOJ) Lecture Hall, 10-16 East Street, Kingston, on Sunday, February 2, beginning at 2 pm.
The series, which is in its 13th staging will be held each Sunday in February, under the theme, ‘Bob Marley at Eighty: His Music, Legend and Legacy.” There will also be an exhibition, ‘From African to Jamaican: Music and Black Culture,’ which explores the Afro-Jamaican creative ethos that has garnered global acclaim.
Prime Minister Mottley’s presentation titled, ‘So much trouble in the world: What we need is love’ will be presented through a pre-recorded video at the event.
Following the video, a panel discussion will take place, featuring Journalist and Attorney-at-Law, Dionne Jackson Miller; Deputy Executive Director, Nationwide 90 FM, George Davis, and Lecturer in Political Philosophy and Caribbean Culture, Professor Clinton Hutton.
The event will be streamed live on the IOJ’s YouTube platform for the public.
Director/Curator, JaMM, Herbie Miller told JIS News that the discussions will revolve around the issues raised in Miss Mottley’s presentation. He noted that the Prime Minister was unable to participate in the question-and-answer session due to prior commitments.
Miller said that the prime minister was selected for the presentation because of her use of Bob Marley’s lyrics to amplify her message on global issues.
He said she frequently draws on Marley’s songs, such as ‘Get up, Stand Up’ and ‘So much things to say’ when addressing global concerns.
Prime Minister Mottley will also address issues such as global warming and the environmental challenges facing humanity today.
“I particularly admire Mia Mottley because of her courage to stand up to the western world on behalf of developing nations. Her advocacy on the international stage has proven highly effective,” Miller stated.
The JaMM is a division of the IOJ, which is an agency of the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport.
