Normalcy expected in schools as teachers accept Gov’t’s new wage offer

Calm is expected to return to island’s schools on Monday, after the delegates of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) voted to accept the government’s latest wage offer.

It’s understood that of the 784 teachers who voted on Sunday, where 629 of them voted to accept. That’s 80-percent of the delegates.

A total of 147 or 19 per cent of educators voted to reject the offer, while eight delegates abstained.

Jam Street Journal understands that there was a marginal increase in the wage offer, which will see trained graduates receiving $25,000 in additional salary in year two and $50,000 in year three.

The teachers staged four days of protest last week, causing widespread disruption across the education sector.

Last Wednesday, 60-percent of the teachers voted to reject a previous wage offer from the Dr Nigel Clarke-led Finance Ministry.
