Press Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), Naomi Francis, says the day of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral will not be a public holiday in Jamaica.

This is in contrast to other Commonwealth countries, including Canada and The Bahamas, where the date of the funeral – Monday, September 19 – has been designated as a holiday.

“As a member of the Commonwealth, Jamaica will observe a period of mourning following HM (Her Majesty) Queen Elizabeth’s death,” Francis tweeted on Wednesday afternoon.

“This is primarily for Government functions. Other activities can proceed as was planned. The period of mourning ends September 19. Also there will be no holiday,” she indicated.

Meanwhile, Minister without Portfolio in OPM with responsibility for information, Robert Morgan, provided more information on the period of mourning in Parliament on Wednesday.
