Luther Buchanan has resigned as the People’s National Party (PNP) Chairman for the East Westmoreland constituency.
The resignation comes as a blow to the party ahead of its annual conference on Sunday.
In his resignation letter, a copy of which was obtained by Jam Street Journal, Buchanan gave no reason for his resignation.
“My resignation is effective as at September 14, 2022,” Buchanan wrote in his resignation letter dated September 13, 2022, addressed to party president Mark Golding and copied to party general secretary Dayton Campbell. However, Buchanan stated that, “I remain a faithful Comrade nevertheless.”
The resignation is being described in political circles as a major blow to efforts towards unity in the Opposition party.
It also comes as the party continues to be plagued by poor performances in two opinion polls – the Don Anderson and Blue Dot Polls – commissioned by the RJR/Gleaner communications group and Nationwide News Network, respectively.
Golding and other party faithfuls have insisted that the polls show that the Opposite leader and the PNP are improving, while the JLP are losing ground.
